Brainsafe today announced early findings from its ongoing development of a smartphone-based tool designed to objectively measure brain function following head trauma.

Using only a smartphone camera and flash, Brainsafe has collected over 2,500 measurements analyzing how the pupil reacts to light, a known neurological response. The initial data show consistent and measurable differences between individuals with a history of concussion and healthy individuals.

Unlike traditional concussion assessments, which rely heavily on subjective symptom reporting, Brainsafe’s approach aims to provide a fast, objective measure of the brain’s response.

The application is robust and catches the pupil measures with high precision, revealing how the brain regulates the pupil response,” says Tony Pansell, Lead Researcher and Professor at Karolinska Institutet and St Erik Eye Hospital, involved in the project.

More importantly, our application can identify distinct neurological response patterns, with differences between normal, healthy pupil function and pupil responses that may indicate brain dysfunction”, Tony continues.

Together, these signals form a neurological “response profile” that may enable more objective detection and monitoring of brain injury.

Brainsafe has already deployed its broader platform to over 100 sports teams in Sweden, where it supports concussion recovery. The new measurement capability, Brainsafe PRO, represents a step toward real-time, data-driven decision-making in both sports and clinical environments.

What excites us is that we’re no longer relying on how someone feels, we’re starting to measure how the brain actually responds,” says Justus Bejnö, Founder of Brainsafe.

If we can make brain function measurable using just a smartphone, we have the potential to fundamentally change how brain injuries are detected and managed. Not only in sports, but across healthcare.”

The company is now preparing a series of clinical studies to further validate the technology, including reliability testing, controlled detection studies, and real-world evaluations in live environments.

If successful, the approach could expand beyond sports into broader healthcare applications, where there is a growing need for accessible and objective tools to assess brain function.
